Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre even in tight areas.
If you're looking for a smooth ride with your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are more prone to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with an repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
Figures have just been released showing that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is in a decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive and look fashionable.
The larger the wheels are, the better your buggy can deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or on rough terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found that it coped well with cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks, and kerbs. Kath wrote "it is sturdy to push and extremely solid when you're on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and require to be pumped up regularly they have suspension built-in. This was extremely comfortable for my kids.
Another thing to take into consideration is the seat size and shape. It should be large enough for your child's comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies will have an option to lie flat completely while others will only allow a parent facing one.
An excellent option for taking on off-road and muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is ideal for a single child from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth to age 4, and comes with a bumper and raincover, a new 5-point harness, and a huge cushioned seat. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the back of the seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels will give your buggy greater stability when driving over rough terrain. This is ideal for off-road buggies. They also allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with the front wheels that swivel to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, while others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at the speed at which they can be pushed. This can also help if you bump into an unintentional tree root or road, as the front wheel will lift up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheel pushchairs have air-filled tyres, which means they are able to handle different terrains and are more flexible than 4-wheeler. They're also lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you'll need to have repair kits and an spare inner tubes on hand.
Our top 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. According to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which according to her "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. The buggies also come with suspensions that according to Kath "smooths out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide and they may be a challenge to fit into narrow spaces. This can be a problem if you are using it as a jogger, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow when out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with small folding options that let you take off the front wheels to create more compact storage.

Easy to manoeuvre
One of the major advantages to a three wheel buggy is that it's much more maneuverable particularly with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her toddler and newborn and stated: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. It was very stable in the downhills or on a rough terrain."
The only drawback to this great maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to consider if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is a problem then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.
